RWANDA Ratifies EAC Common Market Protocol

KIGALI- RWANDA is expected to submit instruments of its ratified EAC Common Market protocol ahead of its launch next month (July 1, 2010).

The Chairperson of the East African Community Council of Ministers, Hon. Dr. Diodorus Kamala told EAC legislators all EAC countries had completed their respective processes of ratifying the Protocol.

Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda already ratified the protocol about two weeks ago while Kenya announced it had ratified its own, early this week.

Under the new arrangement, partner states will have to enact relevant enabling legislations to bring the provisions of the Common Market Protocol into domestic law by 21 August 2010.

They will also have to review their domestic laws to ensure that the same are consistent with the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community.

Some of the laws under review include those relating to business organizations such as the Companies Act, Insolvency, Partnerships and Business Registration Acts had been identified.

Some 45 pieces of legislation on trading, business registrations, investment, insurance and banking have been identified as model laws and Bills for consideration by the East African Legislative Assembly.
